After being paged announcement in a hotel lobby, New York advertising man Roger O Thornhill (Cary Grant) finds himself the victim of a catastrophic case of mistaken identity and is propelled headlong into a deadly game of cat and mouse.

Abruptly leaving town, first for Chicago then on to South Dakota, constantly pursued, he finds his only protection from his pursuers is provided by the evocatively named Eve (Eva Marie Saint). Ultimately Thornhill is not only faced with the task of clearing his name, but the rapidly deteriorating situation he's in means he has to stay one step ahead and fight to stay alive.
