Fausto (Franco Fabrizi), leader of a gang of shiftless young men in a small Italian seaside town, is forced by his father to marry Sandra (Eleonora Ruffo) when it is discovered that she is pregnant. In addition, he is obliged to take a job as assistant in an antique shop. Fausto and his friends persist in their aimless ways - lounging, playing billiards, discussing the possibility of going to Milan and getting a job - and Fausto himself continues his career as a small-town Casanova.

Sandra allows herself to be persuaded that he is innocent, but at last she realises he has been unfaithful and leaves home with their baby. Remorsefully, Fausto searches for her and finally finds her at his father's house. They are reconciled - at least temporarily - but Sandra's brother Moraldo (Franco Interlenghi), also a member of the gang, is provoked by these happenings to some sort of action, and he leaves for the city.
