Directed by James Ivory (THE REMAINS OF THE DAY, A ROOM WITH A VIEW), the story centres on Omar Razaghi (Omar Metwally), an Iranian graduate student of Colorado University who's grant for a fellowship relies on him writing an authorised biography of deceased Latin American author Jules Gund. However when the Gund's estate suddenly withdraws its authorisation, Omar's girlfriend Deidra, strongly urges him to travel to Uruguay and confront the executor's and try to persuade them to change their minds.

Arriving unannounced at the estate, the Gund family all live together inharmoniously on the author's remote estate that has fallen into disrepair. His unexpected appearance upsets the family's - Gund's widow, Caroline (Laura Linney), his mistress Arden Langdon (Charlotte Gainsborough), Arden's young daughter, Gund's brother Adam (Anthony Hopkins) and Adam's partner, Pete (Hiroyuki Sanada) - fragile co-existence.
