Sometimes when you go looking for what you want you find what you need.
Reese Holden (Zooey Deschanel), an actress, returns home to Michigan where her widowed father, Don (Ed Harris), a reclusive novelist still lives. She is hoping to persuade her father to let her have the love letters he wrote to her late mother, as a book editor is prepared to pay quite a large sum to publish them.
However she is surprised to find her father sharing his house with two others - ex-grad student Shelly (Amelia Warner) and Corbit (Will Ferrell), a musician. But Reese is making little headway as her father seems to care more about his new friends than he does himself.
