There are over 300 bank robberies in Boston every year. Most of the professionals live in one square mile neighbourhood called Charlestown. However, Doug MacCray (Ben Affleck) is not cut from the same cloth as his fellow thieves and had a chance of escaping from his father's criminal ways. Instead Doug heads up a band of brutal bank robbers who take exactly what they want then get out clean. Doug's crew are his family particularly Jem (Jeremy Renner) who almost like a brother.
During the gang's last heist, Jem takes the bank manager, Claire Keesey, hostage but when they accidentally discover soon afterwards that she also lives in Charlestown, Jem is worried she might be a problem and wants to see if she a threat to them. Knowing how ruthless Jem can be, Doug takes control and following Claire he decides to deliberately chats her up. Claire is completely unaware that Doug was one of the burglars that had terrorised her at the bank a short while ago and responds to this charming stranger. As their relationship develops into a passionate romance, Doug wants to make a fresh start and quit the town.
Meanwhile Federal Agent Frawley (Jon Hamm) is closing in on Doug's ruthless gang and pressure mounts on him with Jem increasingly questioning his loyalty to them.
