A beautiful, but troubled young woman Anna (Sandrine Bonnaire), seeks help from psychoanalyst Dr Monnier (Michel Duchaussoy). On her way to his office, she becomes distracted, turning the wrong way down a corridor and sitting down across the desk from William (Fabrice Luchini), an unassuming and unsuspecting straight-laced tax lawyer.
Embarrassed but curious, William doesn't interrupt as Anna pours her heart out about her cruel husband and disintegrating marriage. Lonely and introspective, William is captivated, he cannot bring himself to correct this case of mistaken identity and lets the lovely Anna come back for yet another "session".
Soon enough Anna uncovers his charade, but strangely both "patient" and "doctor" find themselves hooked on sharing secrets with an impartial and compassionate stranger. Their weekly engagements continue, but an undercurrent of danger ripples through their conversations. What are his motives? How many lies has she told? Will either of them ever really know the whole truth?
Delving into the subtle complexities of the age-old tension between men and women, INTIMATE STRANGERS (CONFIDENCES TROP INTIMES) is both a psychological thriller and intelligent romance that demonstrates the magical intimacy, fraught with risk that is the fragile beginnings of friendship and love. Nominated for the Golden Bear Award at the Berlin Film Festival in 2004.
