Synopsis

Harriet Vanger vanished 40 years ago during a family get-together on the island owned and inhabited by the powerful Vanger clan. Her body was never found. Over the years a growing sense of disquiet motivates an uncle, who loved Harriet dearly and is certain she's was murdered, to investigate his niece's mysterious disappearance.

He hires a disgraced financial journalist, Mikael Blomkvist (Michael Nyqvist), and the tattooed, troubled yet resourceful computer hacker Lisbeth Salander (Noomi Rapace) - convinced that the killer is a member of his own tightly knit but dysfunctional family.

When the unlikely duo link Harriet's disappearance to a number of grotesque murders from almost forty years ago, they begin to unravel a dark and appalling family history. The Vanger's though are a secretive clan prepared to go to any lengths to protect and defend themselves from Blomkvist and Salander's enquiries and the investigators' intrusive persistence is about to unleash the clan's wroth...

The first of a trilogy of novels by the late Swedish writer Stieg Larsson that have become a worldwide publishing phenomenon, THE GIRL WITH THE DRAGON TATTOO has become the biggest grossing European film of 2009 and is directed by Niels Arden Oplev. Subsequent European release of film versions of the other books in the trilogy - THE GIRL WHO PLAYED WITH FIRE and THE GIRL WHO KICKED THE HORNETS NEST - have extended the success of the franchise.
