Frank Goode (Robert De Niro) has just retired from his lifelong job of working in a wire factory to support his family. Now with time on his hands, it dawns on him that he needs to reconnect with his four children, as he'd always left it up to his late wife to be responsible for the day-to-day running of the house and the children.
Assuming this newfound responsibility, Frank organises an extended family barbecue weekend. Everything seems to be going fine, until one by one his children have a good reason to cancel
Against doctor's orders, Frank then hits on the idea of travelling to each of children and surprising them instead, despite the fact that his son, David (Austin Lysy), lives in New York; a daughter Amy (Kate Beckinsale) in Chicago, his other son, Robert (Sam Rockwell) in Denver and youngest Rosie (Drew Barrymore) in Las Vegas.
As Frank travels from city to city, he begins to discover that his children aren't as happy and successful as his wife had always conveyed - then tragedy strikes. Overcoming this, Frank has the confidence to report to his wife that despite everything, everybody's fine.
